OpenOffice.org and Ubuntu update

| |

Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex didn't come with the newest version of Open Office, due to Open Office 3 not being released early enough for the developers to test it. If you don’t want to wait for the developers of Ubuntu to release Open Office 3, you can open synaptic package manager and add:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu intrepid main

to your third party software sources. Then update. Worked like a charm for me.

Just to let you guys know

Just to let you guys know its PGP which stands for "Pretty Good Privacy" and is used quite frequently in communication links where encryption is required. PGP has made a name for itself by adding PGP keys to E-Mail to verify (and encrypt the data) that the sender of an e-mail is who they say they are (as well as anonymous servers on the internet).

Anyways if you want more info on what PGP is check the usual oracle, wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretty_Good_Privacy

GPG not PGP

GPG is the GNU version!

I'll insert foot to mouth

I'll insert foot to mouth ;)

Thanks for the clarification Ross. Didn't know there is GPG!

Key

Is there a GPG key for this repository available?

GPG key?

I honestly don't know Ross. I'm not a linux expert, I just know that it worked for me. At the risk of sounding ignorant, what is a GPG key?

Thomas

Key

The key is an encryption key for authenticating the repository. When you upgraded using this repository without a key, it should have warned you that the packages could not be authenticated.

Its basically a signature from the repository guaranteeing the package is coming from a trusted source.

If you goto Synaptic -> Settings -> repositories, the fourth tab over should be authentication. It will list all the repository keys you have.

no warning ;)

Hello Ross,

There was no warning, and OOo 3 works fine. Is there reason to be concerned?
