Video: Death of the Desktop

| | | |

I found this video fascinating (although the editing is a bit erratic) so I decided to share it. I personally do not see the personal desktop (hardware nor software) dying any time soon.

There is a lot of passion in the discussion and as a result some passionate words are used that some might find offensive... so be prepared.

How to run a LUG Meeting

I am not sure the desktop will ever give way, but this video certainly tell how to run a very good LUG Meeting.

Death of the Desktop

It was starting to sound like the Attack of the Killer Reactionaries there! Be responsible for the security of your own data? What is the world coming to! I back up a few things to Ubuntu One, not so much because I need to, but because it is there. The "death of the desktop" crowd assumes universal access to essentially unlimited bandwidth, with a high degree of reliability. It also assumes that commercial suppliers of services offer a high degree of security. Neither of these exist in my little corner of the universe, although admittedly, I am in the boondocks. I am probably just another reactionary, but I have always preferred a Jeffersonian model of computing, with lots of little nodes out there, all responsible for their own actions and data, rather than a Stalinist centralized system, where Big Brother is going to take good care of you. And how's that for some high energy buzz words? :)
