A review of "Little Brother"

A few months ago I was listening to a pod cast that was covering some books. I was hearing good things about this book. Personally, I have never been a big fan of a "tech thriller", it always seems that the tech that is in these type of books are (a) impossible or (b) poorly explained. Not really so in this book. The tech could happen, and the stuff that seems a bit over the top are quickly explained out in layman's terms not to lose the average reader.

Marcus, a.k.a “w1n5t0n,” is only seventeen years old, but he figures he already knows how the system works–and how to work the system. Smart, fast, and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting his high school’s intrusive but clumsy surveillance systems.
But his whole world changes when he and his friends find themselves caught in the aftermath of a major terrorist attack on San Francisco. In the wrong place at the wrong time, Marcus and his crew are apprehended by the Department of Homeland Security and whisked away to a secret prison where they’re mercilessly interrogated for days.
When the DHS finally releases them, Marcus discovers that his city has become a police state where every citizen is treated like a potential terrorist. He knows that no one will believe his story, which leaves him only one option: to take down the DHS himself.

Some of the twists and turns of this books are predictable and some of them are not. If you were to break this book up into thirds the first and second parts were good and moved well with the story. The third piece kinda stales out a bit but still makes it with out falling apart.

I would give this a 4.5 out of 5.
Also I wonder how much of what is done in the book is real and how much is fantasy. Should we have everything out on the net? Do we really need face book, my space, twitter? Are we letting Big Brother take over our lives? Should everyone sign and encrypt everything?
And lets just hope that the USA never gets this bad.... and remember to every one ....
